Director’s Corner
With our April Solo Recitals coming up on Sunday, April 25th, we’d like to review basic Concert and Recital Etiquette for both the audience and the performers. This information is not only a part of being a good Suzuki parent, but applies to all events that you and your child may attend and be part of an audience at.
Remember, the first rule is always to enjoy the performance! The information below will help you and those around you make the most of your experience.
Thanks,
Mindy Kesling-Hink, Managing Director

Concert and Recital Etiquette: Manners Matter!
Bethwood would like to take this opportunity to remind our students, families and friends of the importance of concert and recital etiquette. Below are some basic rules of thumb for the performers and audience to follow. Manners do matter. Please take the time to learn proper etiquette; the performers and faculty of Bethwood Suzuki School will appreciate it.
Etiquette Standards for Bethwood Audiences:
1. It is important to attend and plan to stay for the entire concert. This helps your child to observe other students at different levels perform, and supports the Suzuki Method philosophy. If there is a conflict and you must leave early, please inform your teacher as soon as possible, preferably before the day of the concert.
2. Classical music events differ from other types of entertainment. Please observe the following:
Enter and exit your seat only between pieces. If possible, wait until the audience is
applauding before moving. The only exception to this rule is the need to remove a restless
or crying child.
- Do not talk during a performance. Keep whispers to a minimum.
- ALL cell phones and pagers must be turned off or on vibrate mode, please.
- No eating or drinking at events. These venues are rented to Bethwood, and we adhere to their rules and regulations. We expect the same from Bethwood families and friends.
- Sit back and ENJOY!
Etiquette Standards for Bethwood Performers:
This is your time to SHINE! Being prepared and following etiquette standards will help you becomea gracious performer and a good observer. Yes, concerts and recitals can be lengthy at times, soplease come ready to listen and support your fellow performers!
1. Be prepared and on time to concerts. Information is given out at least two weeks prior to the
concert/recital. Know the piece you are supposed to perform. Practice, Practice, Practice.
2. Concert dress for Bethwood students is navy blue bottoms (pants or skirt) with a white top. Forsolo recitals, please wear your “holiday best”. Even if this is your 20th concert, take your
performance seriously and professionally. Remember, all eyes are on you.
3. No talking while others are performing. Be a gracious observer. Support your peers.
4. Be alert! Pay attention and know when it is your turn.
5. Take a deep breath! You’ve worked hard to get to this point, so you should be able to enjoy
your performance. Practice the Suzuki Method philosophy and BOW before you perform and
after you perform. Remember to take a moment before you begin to clear your mind and
BREATH!!!! This is your moment!
